History of Central Jail Sahiwal – Montgomery Prison

Established in 1873, Sahiwal Jail was initially named Montgomery Jail which was built during the British era.

The Central jail Sahiwal was commissioned in 1873 and area of Sahiwal Jail is 70 acres. The authorized accommodation of the Jail is 4000 prisoners.

Central Jail Sahiwal is not only famous but also known historically. Established in 1873, Sahiwal Jail was initially named Montgomery Jail which was built during the British era.

After the creation of Pakistan, it was renamed as Central Jail Sahiwal. Very famous personalities have been imprisoned in Sahiwal jail.

Most of the leaders and poets of Tehreek-e-Pakistan and the present day were imprisoned here and also wrote various books during the long imprisonment.

Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Habib Jalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz are the top among those prisoners who remained in Sahiwal Jail.

The present Central Jail Sahiwal has a capacity of over 4,000 prisoners. Water filtration plants and water chillers are installed in various barracks.

Doctors and paramedical staff are always present to treat the prisoners. Quality food is also provided inside the jail. Special attention is paid to the cleanliness of the kitchen.

Library and Quran Complex are also the adornment of Sahiwal Jail. The lush grounds and beautiful plants also provide a peaceful environment for the prisoners. The jail also has a blanket factory which supplies quality blankets across the country.

There are government PCOs in the jail for the convenience of the inmates. Improving the prison environment undoubtedly helps in making the prisoners a good citizen and reforming them.

A day filled with emotions, tears, hope, and fulfillment, as the cell where Faiz Ahmed Faiz stayed during his prison days from 1953 – 1955 is formally converted into ‘Faiz Ahmed Faiz Ward’.
