Award-winning South Indian actress Parvathy Thiruvothu has termed Hema Committee’s report as a ‘historic moment’ bigger than the MeToo campaign. This report is about sexual abuse and exploitation in the Malayalam film industry.
Speaking to a foreign news agency, Parvathy Thiruvothu said that after the report, actresses came forward to name their alleged assailants.
It is not just another part of Me-Too, but a fight against a systemic structure that continuously oppresses women.
Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) member Parvathy said, “Women working in the film industry should be grateful to the men who are giving them work.”
Allegations of sexual harassment in the film industry are not new. Even after the ‘Me Too’ movement in 2017, such allegations surfaced. According to Parvathy, the Hema Committee report has now highlighted the issue on a larger scale.
“This is your industry, like anyone else’s, you should speak about your abuse so that we (women) can regain our place.”
The Justice Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry said that female actresses face horrific incidents like sexual harassment.
The report sparked a widespread debate on the issue of violence against women and with each passing day actresses are opening up about what happened to them.
