TikTok announced on Friday that Android users in the United States can now download the app directly from its website using package kits, bypassing restrictions imposed on traditional app stores.
The move comes in response to a US law enacted on January 19, which prevents Apple and Google from reinstating the ByteDance-owned app unless its Chinese parent company divests ownership on national security grounds.
President Donald Trump, who assumed office the day after the law took effect, signed an executive order delaying its enforcement by 75 days.
He also stated he was in discussions with various parties regarding TikTok’s purchase, with a decision expected this month.
The app has approximately 170 million users in the US.
On Monday, Trump signed another executive order directing the creation of a sovereign wealth fund within a year, suggesting it could potentially acquire TikTok.
US officials express concerns over ByteDance’s control of the platform, citing risks of misuse of American user data.
However, free speech advocates oppose the restrictions, arguing they unfairly target TikTok.
TikTok repeatedly denies improper ties to China, asserting that Oracle-operated cloud servers store its recommendation engine and US user data within the country.
The company also claims that it makes moderation decisions affecting American users in the US.
