US Slips in Global Happiness Rankings as Solo Dining Rises

Shared experiences, like dining together, contribute significantly to a person’s sense of connection and satisfaction with life.

The United States has fallen to 24th place in the latest World Happiness Report, its lowest ranking since the report’s inception in 2012, according to AFP.

A major factor behind this decline is the rise in solo dining, which has surged by 53% over the past two decades. In 2023, one in four Americans reported eating all their meals alone the previous day.

Experts link this growing social isolation, particularly during meals, to a decline in overall happiness and well-being.

Shared experiences, like dining together, contribute significantly to a person’s sense of connection and satisfaction with life.

Beyond social isolation, the US also faces increasing “deaths of despair,” including suicides and substance abuse, at a time when such deaths are decreasing in many other nations.

These challenges further highlight the mental health crisis affecting Americans.

Meanwhile, Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world for the eighth consecutive year.

Experts credit this to the country’s strong welfare system, low corruption levels, and deep connection to nature.

Other Nordic nations—Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden—also secured spots in the top 10, alongside newcomers Costa Rica and Mexico, underscoring the importance of social support and community ties.

The World Happiness Report evaluates nations based on self-reported life satisfaction, as well as factors like GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, and personal freedoms.
