OpenAI has unveiled a new AI tool, “Deep Research,” designed to conduct multi-step internet research for complex tasks.
The launch follows heightened competition from China’s AI startup DeepSeek, whose high-performance chatbot has sparked urgency in Silicon Valley.
According to OpenAI, the tool can process and synthesize information from various sources, including text, images, and PDFs, producing reports at a research analyst level.
The company claims it can achieve in minutes what would take humans hours.
Despite its capabilities, OpenAI acknowledges the tool’s limitations.
It may struggle to differentiate credible sources from misinformation and lacks precise confidence calibration, sometimes failing to communicate uncertainty effectively.
Deep Research is currently available on the web version of ChatGPT and will expand to mobile and desktop apps by February.
It is OpenAI’s second AI agent this year, following the January launch of Operator, a tool designed for task management and planning.
