Pakistan Reports Another Polio Case in 2024

Balochistan remains the hardest-hit province with 27 cases, followed by Sindh (23), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (22), and Punjab and Islamabad with one case each.

Pakistan has confirmed its 74th wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case of 2024, with Sindh’s Shikarpur reporting the latest infection, according to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The new case, suspected on December 15, 2024, brings Shikarpur’s total to two.

In 2025, KP has reported only one polio case so far.

Polio is a paralytic disease with no cure, making vaccination essential.

Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of routine immunization are crucial for protecting children under five.

Pakistan’s Polio Program conducts regular nationwide vaccination campaigns, while the Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI) provides free vaccines against 12 childhood diseases.

The first nationwide polio campaign of 2025, conducted from February 3 to 9, successfully vaccinated over 45 million children, achieving 99% of its target.
