Saim Ayub Nominated for ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024

This achievement was part of Pakistan's first-ever home clean sweep over South Africa in ODI history.

Pakistan’s rising star, Saim Ayub, has earned a nomination for the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024, following an exceptional performance in the recently concluded One-Day International (ODI) series against South Africa.

Ayub, the left-handed opening batter, played a key role in Pakistan’s historic 3-0 whitewash over South Africa in the ODI series.

In 2024, Ayub featured in nine ODIs, amassing 515 runs at an impressive average of 64.37.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Ayub is one of four contenders for the prestigious accolade, alongside England’s Gus Atkinson, West Indies’ Shamar Joseph, and Sri Lanka’s record-breaking Kamindu Mendis.

In their statement, the ICC highlighted Ayub’s remarkable consistency across all three formats, with a special mention of his standout performances in ODIs. Describing Ayub as a “flamboyant southpaw” at the top of Pakistan’s batting order, the ICC acknowledged his contributions in several key series victories for Pakistan, including away wins in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, as they prepared to defend their ICC Champions Trophy title.

Ayub’s remarkable form was most evident in South Africa, where he scored two centuries in three games, earning him the Player of the Series award.

This achievement was part of Pakistan’s first-ever home clean sweep over South Africa in ODI history.

Ayub’s performances were not limited to the bat, as he also made his mark with the ball.

The 22-year-old claimed five wickets in 2024, maintaining a commendable economy rate of 4.63.

In one of his most memorable performances, Ayub’s all-round brilliance helped Pakistan seal a thrilling victory in Paarl.

Chasing a target of 240 against a formidable South African pace attack, Ayub’s 109 runs off 119 balls—comprising 10 fours and three sixes—guided Pakistan to victory from a precarious 60/4.

His crucial wicket of Aiden Markram earlier in the match further underlined his all-round capabilities, solidifying his position as one of the top contenders for the Emerging Cricketer award.
