Karachi Sees Spike in Stomach Illnesses During Ramadan
Dr Saqib revealed that Karachi requires over 150,000 blood bags monthly, with an annual demand exceeding 1.8 million bags.

Karachi is witnessing a surge in stomach-related illnesses during Ramadan as people indulge in fried and sugary foods, health officials reported on Friday.
Dr Irfan, Emergency In-charge at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, stated that the hospital is recording over 70 cases of cholera and acidity daily, compared to the usual 30 cases.
Similarly, Dr Imran, Emergency In-charge at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, confirmed that 60 to 70 patients suffering from cholera and stomach diseases visit the hospital every day.
Many of these patients also suffer from high blood pressure.
Medical experts recommend including yogurt in Suhoor and Iftar meals, limiting tea consumption, walking after meals, and avoiding sleep immediately after eating.
They advise opting for porridge, fruits, and salads instead of fried and spicy foods, along with staying hydrated by drinking water, lemon water, and fresh juices.
Blood Donation Crisis
Karachi is also facing a severe blood donation shortage during Ramadan, according to haematologist Dr Saqib Ansari.
Patients with thalassemia, haemophilia, anaemia, blood cancer, and other conditions are struggling due to the lack of blood donations.
Dr Saqib revealed that Karachi requires over 150,000 blood bags monthly, with an annual demand exceeding 1.8 million bags.
He urged citizens to donate blood at thalassemia centres and highlighted that donations can be made after Iftar to help save lives.
