Sahiwal Teaching Hospital inaugurates Department of Psychiatry
Depression is increasing rapidly due to increasing stress in the society and bad economic conditions.
Sahiwal (Sahiwal Updates – Teaching Hospital) The inauguration ceremony of the Department of Psychiatry (Mental Diseases) was held in Sahiwal Teaching Hospital, the chief guest of which was the chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry of Services Hospital Lahore, Professor Dr. Samira Qamber Bukhari.
Principal Sahiwal Medical College Professor Dr. Muhammad Imran Hasan Khan, Medical Superintendent Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Supra, Head of Psychiatry Department Dr. Muntarez Mehdi, renowned psychiatrist Dr. Muhammad Rashid Chaudhry, Professor Dr. Nisar Ahmed Saeedi, Professor Syed Haroon Gilani, Dr. Syed Azhar Naqvi were present at the ceremony. Doctors and paramedical staff including Dr. Minhal Chaudhry also participated.
In her address, Prof. Dr. Samira Qamber Bukhari said that mental diseases, especially depression, are increasing rapidly due to increasing stress in the society and bad economic conditions.
For this, it is important to consult a qualified doctor immediately so that the patient can be protected from the ill effects of mental diseases. He said that depression is the second most prevalent disease worldwide which requires serious efforts to reduce it.
He welcomed the establishment of psychiatry department in Sahiwal Teaching Hospital. Principal Professor Dr. Muhammad Imran Hasan Khan, MS Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Supra and well-known psychiatrist Dr. Muhammad Rashid Chaudhry also called the establishment of mental illness department in the hospital as the need of the hour and said that the society should consider mental illness as a disease and Instead of being ashamed or hiding it, timely treatment should be done to prevent the disease from worsening.
Earlier, Dr. Munzatar Mehdi said that initially 15 beds have been kept in the psychiatry department, including 8 for women and 7 for men.
He said that there is a severe shortage of psychiatrists in Pakistan and there are only around 600 qualified doctors in the entire country, who are facing difficulties due to the heavy patient load.
He said that this first psychiatry ward established in Sahiwal division will provide timely treatment facility to hundreds of patients of the division and surrounding areas.
